Housing Peter does all aspects of housing law (both private and public sector), predominantly anti-social behaviour, rent and other grounds of possession, homelessness and allocations, disrepair, trespass and illegal evictions. Peter has found himself specialising in the law of gas inspections, particularly on forced entry through injunctions and environmental law, an issue on which he has written many articles and spoken at housing conferences and training events. Peter also does TLATA 1996 claims, estoppel claims, FLA 1996 rights (especially where these conflict or overlap with housing matters) and adverse possession. Anti-social behaviour Peter specialises in all types of anti-social behaviour law, particularly ASB and other injunctions (and committals), freestanding and county court ASBOs, possession action, statutory nuisance, harassment, and the crossover between them all. Landlord and tenant Peter represents private landlords and tenants on a range of matters, including anti-social behaviour, possession, forfeiture, disrepair, fraud and illegal eviction. Public law Peter advises on, drafts and acts on claims and defences in judicial review on housing matters, and on claims in prison law. Local government Peter does much work for local governments including statutory nuisance prosecution, licensing (particularly taxi) appeals, some planning issues (eg s.215 notices), harassment, injunctions, nuisance, and other environmental, education and trading standards prosecutions. EXPERIENCE Peter came to the Bar following a career in public housing and regeneration, in particular for Camden LBC and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Peter represents local authorities, ALMOs, housing associations, private landlords and tenants, encompassing all aspects of housing law (particularly anti-social behaviour and possession) and related areas of local authority law (including statutory nuisance, licensing, some planning issues and some prosecution work). Peter is a CEDR-accredited mediator. Peter regularly delivers training in all the areas of law and practice listed above, some in association with HQN and the Rent Income Excellence Network, and is a regular contributor to Inside Housing’s legal coverage. In addition, Peter is a board member of The Big Issue in the North and is a tutor at BPP law school. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS Peter is a member of the Housing Law Practitioners’ Association and the Social Housing Law Association. Peter was a member of the Bar Council’s Neuberger Committee on Entry to the Bar, and continues to serve on the Neuberger Monitoring and Implementation Group, and on the Bar Standards Board’s Pupilage Review Group, under Derek Wood QC. He is also on Middle Temple’s Education Committee and is a co-opted member of the Young Barristers’ Committee. |
